What are carbon credits and what is their importance in our lives?

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

The idea behind a carbon credit system was to try to compensate for the emission of greenhouse gases through a program that promotes policies that encourage countries to review their industrial processes in order to reduce atmospheric pollution and its impact on global warming. See entire post

Waste, what should be done about it?

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

Modern society produces an immeasurable amount of daily waste, without a pre-defined plan of what should be done with the resulting mountain of refuse.  For years it was more comfortable to sweep the waste under the rug, that is, any place away from the sight of those who had produced it.

It could be the poorest outskirts of the city, or the neighboring township, or even impoverished countries with corrupt governments, which due to their ignorance accept this time bomb into their territories. See entire post

Water: Our greatest wealth

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

Without a doubt water is, and always will be, one of man’s greatest fortunes. We cannot live without it. However, few people appreciate its true value. Daily we waste enormous quantities of this substance in our personal ablutions.

We are used to thinking about water as an inexhaustible asset, which is not true. Even though 3/4 of the planet’s surface is covered by water, only 3% of that is fresh water.   See entire post

Health is everyone’s right, always

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

People who are not healthy cannot build a dignified and sustainable nation. Each time we come across scenes of the sick lying around in hospital hallways or in waiting rooms, we have a sensation of horror for the disregard for human life.

The irrationality of the financial markets

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

Early this week we were surprised by the crisis in the American financial markets and its consequences around the world. A few months ago the problem surfaced as a threat to the stability of the world market, however, no one knew what would happen in the world if the bankruptcy of some of these financial institutions came to fruition.

As of this week we have learned and have become worried about the repercussions in our lives. We now find that we are restricted to the role of spectators in the development of this crisis, and that we will have to pay a large part of this expense.   See entire post

Education, the key to change

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

Much is said about changing the world, several suggestions come up, many possibilities are discussed, innovative solutions or advanced technologies present themselves as answers to this urgent need to save this imperfect world we’ve created.

However, the key to taking the first step in this journey to remake that which didn’t work is to offer everybody, indiscriminately, the right to learn, the possibility of universal learning, allowing one of the most important things in our lives to come to fruition: equal rights to knowledge.

Health and safety are desired by all and are the cornerstone of our quality of life, but it is good quality education that guarantees equal opportunity for everyone. It is the means for us to conquer our greatest right as citizens, the right to understand the world around us, to improve our lifestyle through our own merits. See entire post

Children, our link to hope

by Luiz Fernando do Valle

Life is a rare gift and nothing compares to it. It is the greatest expression of creation. It may sound like I’m about to talk about religion, but that’s not the case.

I want to discuss a very important subject: the hope for a better life, the hope for building a more equalitarian world with more justice, less violence; a world where we can live with our families in the tranquility of believing that our children and grandchildren will grow up in a healthy and happy environment.

Children are our greatest hope for changing the imperfect world created by our generation and by the generations that preceded us. They are our reason for believing that it is all worth it - fighting against people’s general apathy and indifference, in politicians, business people, clerics, workers, and in anyone who fails to take a firm stance in this fundamental moment of transformation.
